ABOUT CHien CHien Lu

Chien Chien Lu is a jazz vibraphonist, contemporary percussionist, and composer whose Taiwanese heritage, classical training, and deep passion for groove shape her fresh and distinctive voice in contemporary jazz. Her musical journey began at age six with classical piano, followed by classical percussion at ten. After two decades of intensive training — including five years performing and touring across Asia with the renowned Ju Percussion Group — she turned her focus to jazz in 2015.

Growing up in Taiwan, Lu was immersed in the disciplined and refined world of classical music. While she appreciated its beauty and precision, she felt a deeper artistic voice within her that longed for spontaneity and personal expression. That desire eventually led her to the United States, where she discovered jazz and improvisation as a powerful path toward creative freedom and authenticity.

Recently named one of DownBeat Magazine’s “25 for the Future” and one of the Recording Academy’s “10 Emerging Jazz Artists of 2023,” Lu has quickly become a dynamic presence on the international jazz scene. Her collaborative album CONNECTED with bassist Richie Goods won “Best Instrumental Album” at the 34th Golden Melody Awards.

Her debut solo album, The Path (2020), spent 20 weeks in the JazzWeek Top 20, won “Best Jazz Song” at the Golden Indie Music Awards, and received multiple Golden Melody and Golden Indie nominations. She was also voted a “Vibraphone Rising Star” in DownBeat Magazine’s Critics Poll. Her band has appeared at major festivals including the Clifford Brown Jazz Festival, DC Jazz Festival, Monterey Jazz Festival, and Stanford Jazz Festival, touring extensively across Europe, Asia, and the United States.

Before transitioning to jazz, Lu built a distinguished classical career, performing solo recitals, premiering contemporary percussion works, and earning recognition as an “Emerging Young Artist” in Taiwan. Her classical sensibility continues to inform her refined tone and rhythmic clarity.

A pivotal turning point came at the 2017 Banff Jazz Residency, where she studied under Vijay Iyer and connected with trumpet icon Jeremy Pelt, later joining his quintet. Her sophomore album, Built In System (2023), was praised by The Times of London as one of the year’s best jazz and world music releases.

Lu now leads her collaborative project CONNECTED with Richie Goods, which blends groove-driven jazz with global influences and a strong spirit of community engagement. The group is currently preparing to record their second album, CONNECTED Vol. 2.

She is presently based between the U.S. and Europe and is currently in Cologne, Germany, collaborating with the WDR Big Band on a new project to be premiered in 2026.

The Path (2020)

by Chien Chien Lu

Classically trained in contemporary percussion is her native Taiwan, Chien Chien Lu, the emergent vibraphonist best known, to date, for recording and touring with Jeremy Pelt Quintet, is excited to release The Path, her genre melding debut as a leader.
Accompanying Chien Chien are an elite cast of musicians, a group sourced principally from Pelt's ensemble-with the blessing of the maestro. Such a strong blessing, in fact, that Pelt himself appears here on his young protege's debut, alongside bandmates Richie Goods on acoustic and electric bass, Allan Mednard on drums, and Ismel Wignall on congas/percussion.
Goods, in addition to producing the album and arranging its two most recognizable standards, introduced Chien Chien to guitarist Quintin Zoto and pianist Shedrick Mitchell, both of whom prove indispensable here. Though this is not the first time Chien Chien and Mitchell have played together-both played on Goods' most recent release, My Left Hand Man, a tribute to Goods' mentor, the late pianist Mulgrew Miller. And so here we have yet another example of jazz's circle of life: musicians paying mentorship forward.

CONNECTED (2022)

by Richie Goods & Chien Chien Lu

"CONNECTED" was formed during the lockdown. Bassist Richie Goods and vibraphonist Chien Chien Lu had frequent conversations about the Black Lives Matter movement and unwarranted hate crimes against Asians. They decided to undertake a project that would unify people and evoke imagery of love and peace. Not only was the music they produced impressive, but their friendship also deepened as they explored the stereotypical discord that often exists between the African American and Asian communities. Richie Goods and Chien Chien met in 2019 during a European tour. Shortly after, Richie produced Chien Chien's debut album, "The Path." As their collaboration continued to flourish, a new endeavor emerged: "Connected," a project that embodied the profound musical connection between them.

Chien Chien’s foundation in classical training provided a rich and textured canvas upon which their collaborative work thrived. Her intricate knowledge of classical nuances intertwined seamlessly with Richie Goods' background rooted in the realms of R&B and Funk, creating an enchanting juxtaposition of genres that breathed life into their compositions.

Built In System (2023)

by Chien Chien Lu

I would like to dedicate this album to all the people and things that have inspired me. As a woman from Taiwan, I view the world with my eyes and heart, seeking direction and peace. In the process of searching, I use the most familiar tool from my childhood, "music," to compose the sounds that exist in my imagination. I am happy and grateful for the significant individuals who have appeared in my life.
